Thy Word is a Lamp Unto My Feet Outreach

Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path. I have sworn, and I will perform it, that I will keep thy righteous judgments. [Psalm 119:105, 106]

What is the Bible?

The Bible is the written word of the living Deity…

DID YOU KNOW…
…the Bible contains 66 books, penned by more than 40 people?
…the Bible was written during approximately 1,500 years?
…the Bible was written on three continents?
…archeology affirms the Bible’s accuracy and historicity? Examples include:

  • Moabite Stone: [discovered 1868] at Dibon, Jordan confirms Moabite attacks on Israel (ninth century BC) as recorded in the book of 2 Kings (chapters 1 and 3)
  • Lachish Letters: [discovered 1932-1938] 24 miles north of Beersheeba (71 miles southeast of Tel Aviv), describe the attack of Nebuchadnezzar on Jerusalem in 586 BC
  • Dead Sea Scrolls: [discovered 1948] Over 800 fragmentary documents were found, including fragments of 190 biblical scrolls. Documents date from 170-150 BC and contain all or parts of the Old Testament writings, except for the book of Esther
  • Ketef Hinnom Scrolls: [discovered 1979] southwest of Jerusalem, a burial cave contained scrolls with the priestly blessing from the book of Numbers, chapter 6. The first word scientists were able to decipher was the name YHWH. The scrolls date from late seventh century BC
  • Tel Dan Inscription: [discovered 1993] an inscription was uncovered in northern Israel at the foot of Mt. Hermon. The fragment mentions King David’s dynasty, “the House of David.” Two additional fragments were recovered in separate locations in 1994 and date from the end of the ninth or beginning of the eighth century BC
  • Dead Sea Scrolls: [discovered 2021] portions of the books of the Twelve Minor Prophets, including the books of Zechariah and Nahum. The fragments date from the end of the Bar Kokhba Revolt (132-136 AD), in which Jews fought against Roman rule in Judea
  • Huqoq Mosaic: [discovered 2022] covers the entire floor of a Galilean synagogue, dating to the late fourth or early fifth century AD and is the earliest known depiction of the biblical heroines Deborah and Jael. The mosaics illustrate the account from the book of Judges (chapters 4 and 5).

WHERE DID THE BIBLE COME FROM?
Who speaks through the Bible?
God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets. [Hebrews 1:1]

Did the men who penned the words of the Bible recognize the messages were from YHWH?
Yes — here are a few examples:

The spirit of YHWH spake by me, and his word was in my tongue. [2 Samuel 23:2]

Then the word of YHWH came unto me, saying, Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee […] and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations […] and whatsoever I command thee thou shalt speak […] for I am with thee to deliver thee, saith YHWH. Then YHWH put forth his hand, and touched my mouth. And YHWH said unto me, Behold, I have put my words in thy mouth. [Jeremiah 1:4-9]

As he spake by the mouth of his holy prophets, which have been since the world began. [Luke 1:70]

For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the holy ghost. [2 Peter 1:21]

All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: that the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works. [2 Timothy 3:16, 17]

For what purpose was the Bible given?
For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope. [Romans 15:4]
